The Unmade Archive
Ongoing project, begun 2024. Blank square.
A philosophical placeholder for all the work I have not made.
The archive is not empty. There are sketches, notes, half-formed plans. Projects that had real weight before the hours they required were claimed by caregiving, by employment, by the math of doing both. But the archive won't show them. The blank square is a withheld record: what a practice costs when no one is subsidizing it, presented as exactly the nothing it was allowed to become.
Lisa Baraitser writes about time that stalls under the weight of care. Not crisis, just maintenance. Time that is present but not available. Silvia Federici names unwaged reproductive labor as the foundation other labor depends on and refuses to pay for. This project holds both. The blank square marks where creative work should have been.
